KARL FRIESEN

Winnipeg-born Karl Friesen played goal for the West Kildonan North Stars of the MJHL. Using his dual citizenship, he went to Germany to play in 1980-81. During his 15 seasons, his teams won four German championships and he was named goalie of the year and player of the year four times. He became a national hero and represented Germany in six world championships, three Olympic Games, the Canada Cup and on a club team that played in the Spengler Cup. In 1985-86, he played for Maine Mariners of the AHL. He started the next season with the NHL's New Jersey Devils where he played four games including one in Winnipeg against the Jets. He then returned to Germany for 10 more seasons. In 2000, he was named German goalie of the century and in 2003 was inducted into the German Hockey Hall of Fame.
