Winnipeg, Man. -- Nov. 3, 2008 -- The Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame is donating two Automated External Defibrillators (AED's), which administer shocks to a heart in distress, to the City of Winnipeg and one to rural Manitoba to encourage the placing of the potential life saving devices in the lobby of rinks throughout the city and the province. The Hall of Fame Board has been working on the project for a number of months and President Gary Cribbs announced today, the location of the three AED's. "We have selected two Winnipeg rinks named for members of our Hall, Terry Sawchuk Memorial Arena, 901 Kimberly Avenue and Billy Mosienko Arena, 709 Keewatin Street. The third AED will go to the Whitney Forum in Flin Flon, which was the home of the Flin Flon Bombers, 1957 Canadian Junior champions and winners of the Memorial Cup. The team was inducted into the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame in 1999," Cribb said. The importance of AED's has been made apparent by the unfortunate death of 19 year old Alexei Cherepanov of Avanagard Omsk of the Russian Continental League who collapsed on the ice. Among those saved by defribillators are Jiri Fischer of the Detroit Red Wings, former Canadian Women's hockey coach, Wally Kozak and Winnipeg soccer player Chris Kacsmar. Senior hockey players at both Keith Bodley and Pioneer Arenas have collected funds to purchase AED's for their rinks as have soccer players in a 40-plus league. The City of Winnipeg and the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority (WRHA) plan to play a role in ensuring that all city rinks will have defribillators in the near future. The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba is announcing a challenge program which will kick off this month so that a number of athletic and other public facilities will take steps to obtain the vital equipment. AED's with training and wall mounts cost in the area of $2500 to $3000. Group orders could affect the price.
